Hagit Maor
9.12.1955 - 4.9.2013

With pain in our hearts we have to tell you that Hagit Maor passed away on Wednesday, September 4th. She was the heart and soul of Griddlers.net since the year it was founded. Despite the fact that she has been ill for a long time, she kept on taking care of Griddlers for as long as she could.

Most of you probably know Hagit Maor as the user hagitm. Together with Rasto (Ra100), Hagit was the motivating spirit of Griddlers.net since the founding of the site in 2002.
Hagit was always around, day and night, working to improve the site, answering users questions, encouraging authors of new puzzles and helping Griddlers users worldwide.

This article published in Games tells how it all started:
On June 1, 2002 Griddlers.net opened its server to the public.  “In fact I did not maintain the site too much,” Rasto recalls. “For me it was just a playground for programming. Whatever new thing I wanted to test, I could do it there.  Of course, a good website is not only about the technology, it is also about the community and people around.  Then I met Hagit (ha-GEET.)  Well… this story you know from Hagit.”    Rasto is referring to Hagit Maor, a writer and editor from Tel Aviv, Israel.

Hagit, who was also introduced to Griddlers in GAMES, affirms Rehak’s view of their individual roles on the site.   “Rasto is more for the code and I am more for the atmosphere.”  She recounts how she became involved with the site from its infancy:   “When Rasto put the program online... people started to come, me included.  I contacted him by e-mail several times - errors and such… I especially remember telling him about unkind threads in the forum that were to be removed.  In December 2002, he asked me if I could keep an eye on the site while he was celebrating Christmas with his family.  He gave me the ‘keys’ to the site... The rest is history.”

While Rasto continued developing and improving the technology of the site, Hagit focused on building and maintaining a community.  Given the international popularity of the puzzle, Hagit realized that accessibility would be a key factor.  From the very first months of operation, the archived site news is dominated by announcements of languages steadily being “added.”   This involved enlisting the aid of volunteers to translate all of the site’s content from English.  Today, content is accessible in twenty-two different languages, including Slovak, Swedish, Greek and Chinese.

Similarly, a group of people from various countries serve on the Griddlers team.  The team diligently monitors the site for unkind or controversial activity.  It is essential to remain apolitical in order to maintain such a friendly, global community.  These same, simple standards of decency make the site a safe place for children as well.  “… decided to supply the best environment for everyone, kids and families included (no porn, no violence, pay respect to each other, etc.)  It's a bit like ‘Big Brother,’” Hagit admits, “but it gives the users the confidence they are protected.  Feeling that way paved the way to Friendly Meetings.”

Hagit has become a dear friend to many users. Highlights in the history of the site are the two International Griddlers Meetings which she attended. It became clear then that Griddlers.net is not just a site about puzzles, but also a warm, fun-loving community.
She will be sorely missed by all of us.

Hagit and I shared this poem just days before her death. She loved it very much. Perhaps it is a fitting way to think of her now.

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still
Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way you always used
Put no difference into your tone
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
At the little jokes we always enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
Without the ghost of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolute unbroken continuity
What is death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you for an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner
All is well.
Nothing is past; nothing is lost
One brief moment and all will be as it was before
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Dear Hagit, I will miss you more than is possible to say. The first time I tried the chat in this site you were there and we had a nice conversation right away. I had no idea then how much I would get involved into griddlers.net and how many great people I would learn to know this way, thanks to you.

We have met in person three times, during the Meetings in Delft and Bratislava and I have been a guest in your house when your son married. But mostly we met online, by chat, mail, forum, facebook and skype. There is no other person I've learned to know as well through the internet. The worldwideweb will be very empty now, without you.

My heart is with your family and friends.

Love,

For that I will be thankful forever. Words cannot express how I feel. I will miss you sorely. Rest in peace, dear friend.

I don't know if I will be able to express what I want in English. Hagit helped me so often... was son kind to me... When I had problems with the passwords in G-Match, when I needed some ideas for the few translations I did... She were allways there. She answered allways.
I didnt know that she was ill... so young...
Griddlers.net is a part of my life. When I can, I spend some free time here, and I feel good: the desings, the coments, the atmosphere (like it is said in the beginning of the entry)... I knew it was the hand of Hagit.
I'll pray for her.

Rest in peace, Hagit. I had no idea she was ill. emoticon I joined this site at the beginning this year and when I submitted my first griddler, about a month ago, I was surprised that someone from the griddler's team (this person was Hagit) takes the time to write a personal message with encouraging words. Although I don't know her personally, this left me a strong impression.

What can I say that hasn't been said already? I am not too good with words, but I am going to try anyway....

Griddlers and more specifically you, Hagit, have changed my life in so many ways, I can't even begin to name them all. At first when we first 'met' in chat, you encouraged me to continue creating puzzles, although my first attempts were far from perfect. Because of those encouraging words, I worked harder to create not only good puzzles, but more puzzles that YOU would approve of. I remember several puzzles I thought quite good, but you refused to publish them, not because you didn't like them, but because you thought I could do better, and each and every single time you pushed me to creating something better!!

When we met at the first Griddler meeting in Delft, I was quite nervous, not only because I was one of the organizers, but mostly because YOU were going to be there, I was to meet you in person, an experience I will never forget! You were everything I imagined you to be and more...

As Domi wrote before me in this topic, she met her husband during that meeting, I as well met a wonderful girl, Elina, from Finland for the fist time during that meeting (although we had been chatting for a long time, through Griddlers chat), and a couple of years later I made the huge step to move from the Netherlands to Finland, a step that would not have been possible without you. A step that has changed my life forever. I have a fantastic life and a fantastic working place because of the site you helped creating...

Last wednesday when I heard of your passing away I cried my eyes red...I cannot imagine how hard it is for your family to have lost you, if your passing left such a mark on someone who met you only once in person. I can only give all of my love and support to Eli and Elad who I have met as well in Delft, and to the rest of the family who I haven't met, but heard a lot about...

Hagit...II will miss your humor, I will miss your support, I will miss chatting with you, I will miss YOU...

Eli, Elad and Rasto...If you ever need any help with anything, don't hesitate to ask, I will do anything within my power to keep Griddlers alive in remembrance of one of the greatest souls I have ever known...

Rest in peace Hagit, you will be sorely missed......

What a shock this is!  About a week ago I sent an email to the griddlers_team mailbox with a suggestion, and usually I receive an almost immediate reply.  This time I didn't.  I thought that was odd, since I've had many wonderful email exchanges with hagitm and I was expecting this to be another.  I was totally blown away with the sad news.  How young!  What a loss!!  I had no idea she was sick for a long time, so I hope this means that any suffering is over.  With love to her family and friends, Michele.

Hagit was was the same as Griddlers to me, the person that was always there to help me with questions about problems with puzzle submissions, navigating the site, or even stupid things like "could you change the colors of  something that was already published?"  Thoughts and prayers to the Maor family.  No greater tribute could be paid to her than maintaining the incredible international community she helped create.

I am devastated beyond words.  It feels strange shedding tears for someone I have never met, but I feel like I know Hagit so well.  Hagit was always very tough on me as a budding new author, but I could see that for what it was - the greatest of compliments.  Hagit believed in me.  She knew I could do better, and she never took a backward step in telling me so.  I told Hagit that she was a hard taskmaster but that I was very appreciative of that.  And I truly was.  Hagit helped me to discover the importance of quality, and that is something I had to find for myself. Hagit was an amazingly effective teacher.  But despite Hagit's rousing on me from time to time for letting standards slip, her final words to me were full of encouragement, and I had no idea they would be her last.  I just can't believe she is gone.  It seems unreal.  What a hole she leaves.  But whilst Hagit is irreplacable, it is up to us to keep the dream alive and to continue to nurture the community that she poured her life into.   jock

Some of you may know me as elimaor the auther, but I was hagit's daughter before anything. She was my best friend and the best mom I could wish for.
I believe she will stay in our hearts for ever and as long as this site will stay active, I know her spirit is too. Thank you so much for the kind words and the endless support you are experessing.

With great sorrow I learned that Hagit passed away. So young !
I did not know her personally, but during more than nine years that I am here I got to correspond with Hagit many times.
Sometimes consultation, sometimes complaints but always received quick answers to the point.
-I also had the privilege of being among those who sent her - managed by Jeltje
-wishes for her 50th birthday, December  2006.

When I learned that she loves flowers and especially daffodils,

I made sure every time I saw and photographed beautiful wild daffodils, to send her a copy of the photo.I always got a quick response and I think she was happy to see the photos.
Hagit, I know Griddlers site will be different without you, and we all will miss you very much.
My thoughts are with your family !
I leave you with a huge bunch of fragrant virtual daffodils.

Aww, very sory to hear this.
I had some contact with her when I had some problems with this site, due to changes the Microsoft company thought were necesary :s.
She was always so friendly and wanted to help me as good and quick as she could.
I want to share my sympathy and give my condolance to her familiy.
Kind regards,

I never met hagit ... but always had online help, encouragement and advice from her.

hagit .. Griddlers .. Ra100 .. couldn't think of one without thinking of the other two ... they are as one.

hagit will be sorely missed ... but I bet in whatever comes after this life, hagit is already setting up a new Griddlers group ready for when we all have to move on from this Earthly life ... and long may she Griddle ....

I'm on holiday, checked my e-mail for the first time in weeks and found an e-mail from Jeltje sharing this sad,sad news to everyone who has been to the meeting in Delft.

I've only met Hagit once, haven't had (much) contact with her through the site but always felt her presence as something that would always be there, just like the site itself. And now it en she is not anymore ... :-(

How hard must her passing be to everyone who did have regular contact with her, let alone her children, family and friends!
I wish all of you strength with getting used to this huge change in your lives.

So sorry to hear this news.  I always felt a great generosity of spirit from Hagit, and it clearly shaped this vibrant site where I have passed many happy hours.  My sincere sympathies to Hagit's family. - Melissa

Dearest, dearest friends, I only just learned about Hagit's passing. I´m very on/off on the griddler's site every since I joined, oh, years ago, still, I remember Hagit's kind and warm presence on the chats and tournaments. I'm deeply deeply saddened for the loss of a truly special human being. All my love for her family and friends, and love to the entire griddler community which will quite clearly always remember her fondly, as I always will.
