My first profession was being a waiter in different restaurants; during the Summer at an amusement park and during Winter at a bowling alley. I also have served in high-class hotels, and worked my way up to be a manager of a friends restaurant. Until my mom became ill in 2003. I decided to quit my job to become her private nurse. When the medical specialists told her that she wasn't alow to climb up any stairs no longer, we both moved to a bigger apartment which has an elevator on the 11th floor.
Unofortunately she died July 2008 because of her decease, and I decided to work with terminal kids, which I am doing since Aug. 2008.
It's extremely different than my former profession, but the satisfaction is way much higher then when I still was a waiter where I always had to clear the sky when things were going wrong in the kitchen.

It's a great question! I'm not surprised to see so many tech folks out there, and this is a great week for the post since the 25th of May is Geek Pride Day. I join the ranks, but not in the usual way-although several of my grown kids are tekkies. My passion and profession is photo-based counted cross stitch design which I create and "solve" (stitch) for hours every day. The process is exactly like doing Griddlers! I'm a disabled widow so don't expect to have a career that brings in enough for full support, and that's a good thing since there isn't much money in it - I'm just obsessed with the process and ensuring color accuracy. But it's a reward beyond imagining when I can help other folks honor loved ones and favorite places with high quality tapestry design. Problem is I have to convince myself to do the housework and yard care around here :happy1:

What a great passion and profession you have. I have seen tapestries like yours and wonder how anyone would have the patience to sit and do them. I enjoy needlework myself. I love crewel work but can't seem to find many places that have the kits. Lot's of IT people, so something different for a change. Few weeks ago I was working on what I had been educated for, as a cost analyst in internal accounting in a rather big company (on Finnish scale at least). Then I decided that it is time for a change, only after two years working... So now I'm back to my older profession and started my own company as a dressmaker. Now I repair people's clothes, make them, make curtains, table cloths, accessories both for people and pets, knit, crochet, embroider... It has only been three weeks now and I have had three customers but I hope I become busier once I get the advertisements sent.emoticon However I'm still using the knowledge of my accounting experience and education as I do the bookkeeping myself.

I started off rough. I was born in a back alley in downtown Los Angeles, never knew my parents. Reared by gang members, I created a drug smuggling empire by the mid-'80s. I went legit just before they tore up my network. During that time I finished my doctorate and invented a few cures for cancer, but the International Pharmacy Cartel shut down my research and put a price on my head. I became a shadow and roamed four continents for a decade, earning spare change as dock worker, plumber, neurosurgeon, investment analyst, sous-chef, astronomer, whatever paid the bills. Now after having acquired plastic surgery and a new identity I lounge away on my yacht with an entourage of like-minded Illuminati, but still with one eye on the open seas for those IPC thugs, several of whom so far have "vanished," and perhaps more to come.

Oh wait, I just remembered, that was someone else. I'm a software engineer too.

I have been retired for 2 years.  I was a Database Administrator previous to retiring.  And many years ago originally started out as a. . .guess what. . .programmer.  For many years, Griddlers has been my favorite way to wind down from a stessful day and keep what sanity I had left.  It has been the best therapy.
