What is ideal Griddlers solver? Which features do you need, which are not important? And what about font style, lines, layout and so on?
Here are three our solvers :
1 - Java version, the same is also in iGridd
2 - Lite version - it works everywhere but no so many features
3 - Old java version

Please tell us which one is the best or how would you combine features or look of these versions. Take your favourite graphics editor and design your prefered solver.
Rate the following functions - which are more important for you? Add numbers 0 - 10  , 10 = must have
- change colors of puzzles
- change colors of gridlines
- change thikness of gridlines
- locked clues
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler
- pause
- automatic pause
- free drawing mode
- line drawing mode

Here are my wishes:
1 - Java version, the same is also in iGridd - The best of best - don't change it! (OK, you may add or remove some things)
2 - Lite version - it works everywhere but no so many features - very slow and frustrated, I rather stop solving than use lite version
3 - Old java version - after new java version, I don't use it anymore

- change colors of puzzles 10
- change colors of gridlines 5
- change thikness of gridlines 5
- locked clues 10
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler 0
- pause 5
- automatic pause 5
- free drawing mode
- line drawing mode 0
- area (rectangle) drawing mode 10
- XO markers on puzzle body 10
- XO markers on Clues 10
- semaphores - green/red indicators 10
- cell counters 10
- show pattern 10

0 means - I don't use it at all
5 means - I won't miss if it's gone
10 means - I would "die" if you take it off

What I miss? In iGridd applet I would love to have in the toolbar also buttons for undo and redo because many times my cats are helping me to solve griddlers and I have to clear many cells. I know I can use also backspace but they usually lay in front of me and I have to cuddle them. emoticon

I use triddlers mostly. For this I prefer the iGridd version.
The main functions I use are changing colours of both the cells and the guide lines.
I would like a fill in function similar to griddlers for where there are large blocks of colour

I appreciate everything you do to keep this site functioning.

"What is ideal Griddlers solver? Which features do you need, which are not important? And what about font style, lines, layout and so on?"

I only use the Java version. The other two feel somewhat clunky after having used this one.

- change colors of puzzles 10
- change colors of gridlines 0
- change thikness of gridlines 0
- locked clues (don't even know what that is emoticon)
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler (same here)
- pause 10
- automatic pause (don't need it since I can pause manually)
- free drawing mode 10 (very handy for small gridders)
- line drawing mode (never used it, this opion is available in the area drawing mode)
- area (rectangle) drawing mode 10
- XO markers on puzzle body (I have never understood the added value of this option, don't use it)
- XO markers on Clues 3 (only use it at griddlers with a lot of clues)
- semaphores - green/red indicators 10
- cell counters (can't use it, don't miss it)

The lineair clues most left and top of the applet, is something I won't miss if it would be gone.

There are two features that would make my griddler experience even better:

- Changing colors for left and right clicks, is something I would do a lot during large multis. It  would be great if there would be an option to swap between colors quicker. I really don't see how this would be achieved, but it would be wonderful.

- Second feature should be somewhat easier to develop. I find myself changing colors quite a lot, since some colors are rather close in one and the same puzzle. I tend to change them into a favorite set of colors. It would be nice to be able to create a personal favorite set of 8 colors and have the colors of a puzzle changed into these if I wanted to. (As you know, men are said to be partially color blind, which gives women a big advantage in solving griddlers more quickly emoticon).

I think that I need one option. hmm.. i'll try to describe this the best as i can. I won't need "
semaphores - green/red indicators" if there will be something like "graying clues". When i draw some line, the clue will change it's color on more white but I still can see number and a little the right colour (google said that its "whitewash" but i don't think that's a good word). Thanks to this option i'll know that I already "draw" this clue. I think that it's difficult to do it automatically (it'll be some kind of hint) but maybe we could make it gray? For now I use XO to mark drawn clues but it's not so comfortable.

Actually this is not possible. If there are several equals values in one line, system can't know which one is actually filled. Well, sometimes it is obvious but sometimes it gives you too much information.

Here are three our solvers :
1 - Java version, the same is also in iGridd---i use this one for really large puzzles.  there are some things that I either haven't figured out or that don't work the as in (3) -- in particular the ability to clear the markings on the clues and to cover a large space by holding down the mouse button -- this works for me in the old java version but no in igridd.
2 - Lite version - it works everywhere but no so many features -- hardly ever use
3 - Old java version - still my favorite

Please tell us which one is the best or how would you combine features or look of these versions. Take your favourite graphics editor and design your prefered solver.

- area (rectangle) drawing mode   have not used, not sure what this is
- XO markers on puzzle body  10
- XO markers on Clues  10
- semaphores - green/red indicators   10
- cell counters   5

a feature I would like to see would be the capabiity to store multiple versions of puzzle you're working on. that way if you really mess up you could go back to a version that you know was good and start over.   (at least 2 saved versions would be good).

thanks so much for asking -- you guys are outstanding.

1 - Java version, the same is also in iGridd This is the only version I use now; it has the best overall features.
2 - Lite version - it works everywhere but no so many features Only use this if the Java version is not available for some reason, but I get frustrated with it very quickly due to the lack of features.
3 - Old java version

Rate the following functions - which are more important for you? Add numbers 0 - 10,
0= don't use or know about, and thus don't care if it changes; 10 = must have; can't live without!
- change colors of puzzles 10 - this is a life saver on some of those puzzles where the colors are similar; I use it all the time.
- change colors of gridlines 8 - it's really helpful to change the gridline color on every fifth line so multiples of five stand out. Mine is set to red and I leave it that way. Also being able to change the color of the row/column location of your cursor is very helpful.
- change thikness of gridlines 0 - haven't used this
- locked clues 0 - haven't used this
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler 10 - this is a must for me to be able to see the clues easier. I typically solve on a laptop/notebook with a small screen so the larger puzzles don't fit well unless I keep the overall grid size small. But then the number clues are often too tiny to see clearly, so the MCR is vital. I like that you can toggle it off if you don't like it, so this keeps the non-MCR folks happy.
- pause 10 - absolutely vital. Of course, I sometimes walk off and forget to use it! So much for the mid-times in those cases!
- automatic pause 5 - didn't know there was a feature for this, but would be nice to have in some cases (see my previous comment).
- free drawing mode 0 - don't use
- line drawing mode 0 - don't use
- area (rectangle) drawing mode 10 - this is the mode I keep mine set to all the time; it's absolutely vital when filling in large adjacent sections of the same color.
- XO markers on puzzle body 8 - these can be really handy when I identify an area of one color that spans several rows and columns, so I mark the entire area and then work back to see where the colors really fit. I also use this feature to indicate places where I'm using a bit of trial and error to place a section of color.
- XO markers on Clues 5 - I've forgotten about this feature, but I have used it in the past. I can see where it might be helpful, but it's not vital.
- semaphores - green/red indicators 10 - very handy; I refer to these all the time
- cell counters 8 - didn't know there were cell counters, but these would be very useful when my arthritis acts up and I have trouble moving the mouse cursor over the squares while manually counting.

- free drawing mode 5
- line drawing mode 0
- area (rectangle) drawing mode 10 This is the mode I prefere.
- XO markers on puzzle body 10
- XO markers on Clues 10 I use X all the time. But I wonder if it's enough with either of them. Since I've got problems with my shoulder from holding the shift/ctrl-buttons down I wonder if it would be possible to use only mousebuttons for the clues. One left click on a clue will x-mark it, one more will unmark it. It would save a hurting shoulder a little bit.

Am I correct in assuming that the screencaptures are in the order listed?  In that case, I guess I'm still using the old java version (#3)?  Haha, I wasn't even aware that there was another option.  How do I use the new version?

Anyway, for the rest:
- change colors of puzzles 10
- change colors of gridlines 3
- change thikness of gridlines 3
- locked clues
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler 10
- pause 10
- automatic pause
- free drawing mode 3
- line drawing mode 8
- area (rectangle) drawing mode 10
- XO markers on puzzle body 8
- XO markers on Clues 8
- semaphores - green/red indicators
- cell counters 10

Bold numbers: 10 meaning I use it all the time/completely essential; 8 meaning I use it sometimes, and would rather the function stayed intact; 3 for things I've never used (or used only once or twice), but might be useful to someone or in certain puzzles

Bold/italic, no number: for features that I have never used and frankly don't really understand or know how they work, lol.  They might be useful, but I don't know how to use them, so I won't judge their importance.

Here are three our solvers :
1 - Java version, the same is also in iGridd- love it! But no longer works in Chrome browser (damn you Google!)
2 - Lite version - it works everywhere but no so many features- Only use when Java is slow during tournaments
3 - Old java version- never use

Please
tell us which one is the best or how would you combine features or look
of these versions. Take your favourite graphics editor and design your
prefered solver.
Rate the following functions - which are more important for you? Add numbers 0 - 10  , 10 = must have
- change colors of puzzles-8, sometimes colors are too close together (just discovered this one)
- change colors of gridlines-9
- change thikness of gridlines-0
- locked clues-0, what is this?
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler-0
- pause-10
- automatic pause-0, no idea what this is or how it would work
- free drawing mode-5
- line drawing mode-2
- area (rectangle) drawing mode-10, always use this one
- XO markers on puzzle body-7
- XO markers on Clues-10, omg, I didn't know you could do this!
- semaphores - green/red indicators-10
- cell counters- 5? not sure what this is, but sounds useful.....

1 - Java version, the same is also in iGridd 0 (Awfully slow, sometimes even does not work. It was impossible for me to attend in T-match or G-match. It took me twice as long as the average time was, to solve the puzzle.)
2 - Lite version - it works everywhere but no so many features 1 (A bit better, but still too slow.)
3 - Old java version 10 (Definitely the best one. I was able to score in top 10 in T-matches and my time usually is between third and half of average time)

- change colors of puzzles 3
- change colors of gridlines 0
- change thikness of gridlines 5 (Every fifth or tenth line in triddlers would be helpful in old java version.)
- locked clues 8 (It would be very helpful for me. I do not know whether it is in old version.)
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler 0 (It is annoying.)
- pause 10 (Necessary for difficult puzzles.)
- automatic pause 0 (Average time)
- free drawing mode 10
- line drawing mode 7 (It would help in old version.)
- area (rectangle) drawing mode 8 (It would be helpful in old version.)
- XO markers on puzzle body 10 (But it is terrible, that you have to use different mouse buttons in griddlers and in triddlers. It is better in triddlers.)
- XO markers on Clues 7 (I used them only in hard cat griddler, but it was helpful.)
- semaphores - green/red indicators 10 (Yes! I use them instead of counting cells)
- cell counters 6 (If it is optional)

I think, it would be helpful to have "hexagonal area" drawing mode for triddlers, "custom area" drawing mode - you will draw borders of object and it will make whole object coloured (but I understand it will be difficult for program to decide whether colour inner or outer part) and maybe "colouring only noncoloured squares/triangles in this area".
Moreover I prefer as minimal menu as possible, because I have a small screen and
it is more important for me to see bigger part of the puzzle, than to have big menu.

Although not in the list I would say that my favourite solver is iGridd on Ipad. Most of the time I solve the Griddlers on my Ipad. I would like to see that I could solve Triddlers as well on my Ipad. (as well as the logic Puzzles). Additionally I would like to get access to all the puzzles on my Ipad that are accessible via the web.
Although it is possible to use a webbrowser and solve puzzles via the  Lite Version it is far from ideal.
So if the development could be done in this direction too, I would be (very)gratefull.
(But I know: A fool can ask for more than 1.000 proffessor can answer emoticon)

For the moments I work on my desktop, my answers would be that my ideal would be to use Igridd
and for the options I would give the following ratings:
- 5: change colors of puzzles

- 3: change colors of gridlines
- 3: change thikness of gridlines
- 1: locked clues
- ?: MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler
- 1: pause (I don't mind my times)
- 1: automatic pause
- 1: free drawing mode
- 9: line drawing mode
- 10: area (rectangle) drawing mode
- 10: XO markers on puzzle body
- 10: XO markers on Clues
- 5: semaphores - green/red indicators
- 10: cell counters

1 - Java version     10     only one I use unless there’s a problem with it
2 - Lite version     5     great to have as a backup
3 - Old java version     0

My Ratings:
- change colors of puzzles     10
- change colors of gridlines     3
- change thickness of gridlines     7
- locked clues      (I look forward to using this as a subscriber)
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler     10 (I think this is an absolute necessity for non-subscribers on larger puzzles)
- pause     10
- automatic pause     0
- free drawing mode     0
- line drawing mode     0
- area (rectangle) drawing mode      10
- XO markers on puzzle body     10
- XO markers on Clues      10
- semaphores - green/red indicators      10
- cell counters      (think I’ll use now that I’m a subscriber)

The fonts in Griddler are great, but since you changed them in Triddlers last December I’m having a huge difficulty seeing the difference between 6’s and 8’s. I know you said that you had to change it so that Triddlers could be used on different platforms but would it be possible to pick a different font that fixes this problem. It would sure save a lot of frustration, wasted time and my poor eyes.

I would also appreciate the ability to save extra versions of the puzzles as Krop suggested.

Thanks to you and the team for all your work on keeping this such a great site.

Hi Ra100,

I always enjoy Griddlers with your programms for more than 10 years.
Thanks a lot for your programming. :-) :-) :-)

So, here are my preferences.
(10 always using; 5 see comments; 0 not used/needed up to now)

- change colors of puzzles -> 10 (it's a must have. Esp. for very similar colors and shades of one color.)
- change colors of gridlines -> 0
- change thikness of gridlines -> 0
- locked clues -> 5 (not used up to now; will try it out the next times. Might be useful for Griddlers by Andreassss)
- MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler -> 10 (showing: 10; hidden: 0)
- pause -> 10
- automatic pause -> 5 (not consciously used. I think, I always pause manually, but thank to this feature, I can not prove it.)
- free drawing mode -> 0
- line drawing mode -> 0
- area (rectangle) drawing mode -> 10 (I am using this only)
- XO markers on puzzle body -> 10
- XO markers on Clues -> 10
- semaphores - green/red indicators -> 10
- cell counters -> 0 (discovered this feature just seconds ago. Don't think that I will need it.)

I am always using iGridd Webstart. Please, don't remove my "10-points" features from iGridd.
Griddlers is the reason why I always take my laptop with me when staying over night somewhere else.

Best regards,

I've been using the lite version recently, and didn't realize it.  I like the new java version better, though I do like the dots in the background on the lite version.  I do like the quick button in the lite version to change the colors to a standard palette for when the puzzle colors are close (though I can see wanting to customize that to "my palette", since some people don't like the bright colors, and others may be colorblind).  The ability to have some settings that can be set as "my defaults" like that, or preferred grid size, or whether the MCR is on, or a preferred background color instead of grey would be great!

As for features, here's my opinion:
10 - change colors of puzzles  (Vital for some puzzles. I love the quick change button in lite version.)
8 - change colors of gridlines (I have done this and it keeps my setting which is wonderful.  Very useful at times.)
2 - change thickness of gridlines
?? - locked clues (I don't know what this means but I sure want to know. Why is it only available to subscribers?)
5 - MCR - Magnifying Clues Ruler (But this is because I don't do the largest puzzles, when I have done larger ones, this was useful.)
10 - pause (Vital for average times to be relevant.)
10 - automatic pause (This would be great, but as far as I know, is not currently implemented)
3 - free drawing mode
3 - line drawing mode (With the current implementation of area mode, these are not needed, IMO)
10 - area (rectangle) drawing mode  (You need to make this work in Triddlers, too!!)
10 - XO markers on puzzle body (Vital for large tricky puzzles, maybe have more options for color or symbol here?)
10 - XO markers on Clues (Again, vital for tricky puzzles.  Would be nice to have ability to change color of marks, as sometimes they are hard to see on the triangle clues.)
10 - semaphores - green/red indicators (I use these all the time. They do need to be wider on the Java version, like they are in the lite one.)
8 - cell counters  (Is this currently available?  I'd love it for larger puzzles!)

Due to having Fibromyalgia the ONLY version I can use is 'Old Java' ... those awful bold question marks in the iApplet give me terrible headaches ... and I can hardly complete one small Griddler without having to stop work if i try and use it ....

So for me ... as long as I have old java format I can still play on the site ... and I have never foud any of the XO markers or whatever they are called of any use to the way I solve my Griddlers ... I just go for it ... I can keep quite long strings of numbers in my head so can work without extra prompts on many Griddlers ...

And for the record ... I find this new recently updated version of my beloved Griddlers is pretty grim ... the list of Griddlers available now rambles all the way across the page making quick checks of times, points etc with title hard to follow ... on my laptop all the words now seem to be out of focus ... and honestly that pale blue print is really wishy washy and vague ... MUCH prefer the old style... MUCH easier to find my next Griddler ... and MUCH easier on the eyes ... I really have no idea why you would have wanted to change it ... sigh

I've just logged on to do my usual daily dose of griddlers and am horrified at the interface change.  Not putting it too finely, it is unusable.  If that is how the interface is to be then I simply cannot use the site any longer, and my main internet leisure activity has disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

The recent change for the general site layout is good but otherwise I agree totally with the recent message (09/01/16) from patootie.

I honestly cannot say which version I have been using, but it is like this one.  All I know it has been my interface of preference in all the time that I have been using the site.

No, no, no. I agree completely with John Elliott--the puzzles are totally unplayable with the new interface today. I have tried in both Chrome and Firefox (newest versions of each), and I am unable to change the colors. No matter what I choose from the colors menu I get only two colors, black and white. The white squares are no different from the background/starting squares, so I cannot tell where I have determined the blank spaces to be. There need to be at least three colors (foreground, background, and un-clicked), otherwise you cannot play at all because you cannot tell where you have right-clicked.

Even if there was a grey in with the black and white, I get migraines and have always changed the color scheme to have a gentler mix of dark grey background and lighter color (not white) foreground, but now I cannot. Choosing the different "Original/alternative/etc." choices in the colors menu does nothing. Still only black and white.

These issues with the colors need to be fixed, or like John Elliott, despite the fact that I have spent countless hours enjoying the puzzles here, I will not be returning to this site to play as it will lead only to headaches and frustration for me.

Okay, from the background menu I was able to make the background grey so at least there are three colors now, but I am still unable to get any colors other than black, white, and grey. None of the color menu options change anything.

I happen to be playing a b/w puzzle right now, but like one of the other posters mentioned, when I'm playing a color puzzle and some of the colors are too near each other, I often change all of them to make it easier to solve and easier on my eyes. I would very much like to continue to be able to change each color separately, not just switch to a whole palette chosen by someone else.

Just logged on, been solving Griddlers for quite some time and keep coming back to my main source of time spent.

The new applet has it's faults. The settings menu had options I don't understand. But I can learn to live with that. The out of focus thing is a bother though, but I guess that's a tweak.

But the two things I miss the most and that'll make it unplayable for me (at least when solving larger puzzles with multiple colours) is a quick fix to enter X and O. It states that I should be able to type the letter and get it. That does not work. And how I used to solve is to use X/O for various markups as I went along, and it was really good to have that on a shift/ctrl functionality rather than seen as separate colours.

I've also been solving puzzles with various types of green in them, which is a hassle. So I keep editing the colours and make them wonky and easy to discern from the other colours. With the new schemes that's not possible.

With that said, I love that after this many years there's still updates and the original creators are still here and really care for the site and I love that there's a new update. Even though this one cause me a bit more pain than just a learning curve.

So, thank you RA100 for the update, I'm happy about that bit at least. emoticon

Yes.  Exactly the same problem.

I understand the reason for the new interface since modern browsers are reaching the point where they dont allow java applets to run, hence the need to move to the new interface, and the reason why the change had to occur.  I also want to stress that I am grateful to the administrators for producing what is such an enjoyable site.  I think the biggest problem with the new interface was one of shock, as in not being prepared for it.

Having spent some time working with the new interface, I have overcome some of my gripes so I would like to outline the outstanding issues as I see them for clarity:
1.  Save doesn't work - keep getting error
2. Unable to change colours easily which i vital when solving Griddlers that have closely matched colours
3. No preview window in top left corner

I mark used numerical clues with an X and I mark items with X or O depending on if they have to be a specific colour or not. Especially when solving very complicating griddlers.

Earlier I pressed shift or ctrl to access it. But that does not work. I have to go up and click them on the side. And when I want to go to another colour I either have to go back up to the top and select one there, or use the number on the colour to select it. Because clicking on a clue of course marks it with an "X" instead of selecting that colour (which makes absolutely perfect sense).

I'm keen on having it as a quick-access that sort of overrides the colours, because they are just marking options, it's too tedious to go between X/O/Colour with the keyboard, so much faster with just shift+right/left click. emoticon

So if that comes back I'm a very happy person again!

Note: went to play and found that the green-lighting of solved rows/columns has disappeared. And I'm reasonably sure I saw them yesterday. So that's another thing I'd like fixed. (Edit: Just tested a small griddle where it started working after first click, so could be that I opened the saved item and it would've updated after a click - which I didn't do because I'm soooo stuck)

Note 2: Solving one of the hardest multis in Griddlers which is why I'm using all the aid I can get from the system!

Hi
fast XO ferature is there thought not exactly the way it was. The support of Shift Ctrl and other special buttons plus mouse vary on different browsers/OS so I decided to simplyfy it.
Now everything is on Ctrl + Mouseclick. Left button is for X and Right for O . But instead of Shift you can delete marker by clicking the same again.

Semaphores indicator - it is still there. I think there is one glitch - when you reload puzzle, semaphores are blank and they are calculated just when you make some change.
This si something what I can fix.

There is on thing missing - counters. I must decide where and how to place counters so they are visible also without MCR . It may be on place of preview image shown just when are needed.

That is correct, it now works, except one itsy-bitsy thing. I cannot mark multiple lines. As I suffer from mouse-arm I like not having to click a multitude of times if it can be avoided, so if you could pretty-please make it so that it can be drag/dropped as before. Then I'll be silent (and forever happy (unless it disappears again!))

And thank you for all your quick work. I really appreciate how fast you've done this, and I am happy that you're so quick and resolving the things that bothers me (and possibly others). I'm impressed!

Hi, you can mark multiple lines by clicking XO in left color palette first - it works without keyboard which is new thing.
There is toggle logic there
- click on X in palette, you will see X in color indicator in top left corner.
- drag over an area in puzzle - if you start on not marked cell all cells will be marked, if you start on marked cell all will be clear.

And please don't be silent. If you have any new idea please come with it.

I just want to say thank you to Rasto and anyone else who has been involved for the effort that has obviously put in to sort out the problems with the new interface.  It shows, as it is now very useable and not a problem at all.  I am so pleased a I dont know what I would have done without my daily dose of Griddlers!! :-)

Save is now working, colours are selectable.  The only thing I would say now is a suggestion, being a feature that used to exist - when you hovered over a column with the cursor, it used to show on the left hand side an expanded version of the pattern that is required on that column.  It saved having to track your eyes up that column to look at the pattern at the top of the grid.

Once again, thanks Rasto

If what you're missing is the magnified view of the row and column you're on, it's still there--in settings select Special -> MCR On.

Hi Guys, I am back.
There are two new features deployed fo subscribers, you can find them in Menu -> Large puzzles support :
1. New mode for counters
When paint - it shows counters only when you drag the mouse to select area. It is less annoying than all time counters and still very usefull.
2. Locked clues - it turns off MCR but keep both headers on place and scroll them in one direction only. It is hard to explain in text, you must try it.

I have only ever used the 'Old Java' ,, I rarely if ever use any features other than changing colours now and then when it is hard to see the clue numbers .. If Old Java ever came to an end .. then I would have no choice but to stop playing ... when I once tried the 'new' iGridd it gave me terrible headaches, I just cannot use it at all . ..

Old Java is my perfect grid solver .. it's simple, it works .. and is easy on the eye ... emoticon
