I think it is more likely they haven't done very many of the other puzzles, or, they tried one and thought, why didn't they do it this way?..." and have to try their own version.

I thought this one was a nice variation and makes a good 'learner' puzzle.

I am always amazed at how many very similar or almost identical puzzles get posted here. It's like people solve a puzzle, then decide to put up one as an homage to it.
