The blue streamer things are totally unnecessary, and are only in the puzzle to make it more difficult. I don't like them at all. The branches are also somewhat not needed, but are a lot more acceptable than the blue stuff. The bird itself was fairly easy, but the rest of it took me forever to do. I was going to just give up and quit, but I finally got it done.
